There are many reasons why chick flicks are the best and why we love them so much. Chick flicks are defined by their primary appeal to women. They tell the stories of women, made for women, usually created by women. If you are looking for female-centric cinema, chick flicks are the go-to type. Here are my 7 Reasons Why Chick Flicks Are the Best.
#1 – Chick flicks feature strong female characters.
Watching independent, strong-minded women who take control of their situation and turn their life for the better is incredibly empowering. These leading ladies are the ones we all look up to and wish we could be a bit more like them. They can be fighters like Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), champions of self-confidence as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde (2001) or all-around amazing human beings like Juno MacGuff in Juno (2007).
#2 – Real chick flicks focus on women and their issues.
Nothing puts women’s problems as much in focus as chick flicks do. It is their innate nature. Women face various issues throughout their lives, and the best chick flicks address these distinct situations with a unique understanding and the intent of offering help. Let it be the fight against a big corporation like we see it in Erin Brokovich (2001), self-discovery as portrayed in Wild (2014) or navigating high school like it is represented in Clueless (1995).
#3 – There is a chick flick for every occasion.
Whether we feel happy or sad or downright miserable, there is a perfect match for every mood. That’s why chick flicks are the best. For a girls’ movie night watch the Bachelorette (2012). Begin Again (2013) was made to be a date movie. Finally, for a heartbreak, Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) is the perfect remedy.
#4 – The best chick flicks guide us.
Not all chick flicks are created equal. Unfortunately, many of them showcase toxic behaviour or unrealistic representations of relationships and everyday social interactions. But the very best of them offer lessons for a lifetime and useful pieces of advice to be taken to heart. Some of them even shaped our own decisions as women. I am sure that the morality of Casablanca (1942), Out of Africa (1985) or even Titanic (1997) had a lasting effect on many lives.
#5 – Chick flicks show female bonding.
Some chick flicks portray a complicated mother-daughter relationship like Lady Bird (2017) does. Others display the complex bond among sisters as we can see it in The Virgin Suicides (1999). Many chick flicks depict an intricate female friendship as Thelma & Louise (1991) or Beaches (1988) does it at their best.
#6 – Good chick flicks make you feel all the feelings.
From bursting laughs to uncontrollable sobbing, the best chick flicks have it all up their sleeves, and they are going to play their cards too. But that’s what separates art from entertainment. I promise it’s going to be worth it. For the big leagues check out my all time favourites and my personal guide to romantic comedy.
#7 – Chick flicks leave us with the chance of a happy ending.
Finally, we all crave for a “happy end.” Even if it’s an unconventional one (Silver Linings Playbook (2012) or if it is more bitter than sweet (La La Land, 2016), the very idea of a possible happy ending is a powerful one.
Do you have anything to add to the list? Why do you personally love chick flicks? I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions, so please share it with me in the comments down below.
